Punjab Teachers Crackdown on Political Affiliation

Punjab Education Department Targets Politically Affiliated Teachers

The Punjab Higher Education Department has announced it will take strict action against government teachers and employees found to have political or religious affiliations. This major crackdown on Punjab teachers with political connections comes after multiple complaints. According to the department, several staff at government colleges and universities are not only active members of such organizations but also hold key positions within them, which violates service rules.

Enforcing Service Rules in Government Colleges

Officials have received formal complaints submitted to the provincial education minister and secretary. The complaints urge disciplinary measures against the accused staff. Under existing service rules, a government employee is prohibited from being a member or office-bearer of any political or religious party. This policy is in place to ensure impartiality and focus on educational duties.

The department is taking these complaints seriously and has stated that action will be taken under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEDA) Act. This act provides the legal framework for proceedings against government employees who are inefficient, guilty of misconduct, or engaged in activities contrary to their code of conduct.

Accused Teachers and Allegations

The complaints specifically named several individuals, alleging that they have held significant roles in political and religious organizations. This is considered a direct violation of their service regulations. The named individuals include:

  • Dr. Matiullah Bajwa, Lecturer at Government Gulberg College
  • Dr. Hammad Lakhvi, Dean and Professor at Punjab University
  • Lecturer Abdul Rehman Shariq
  • Dr. Ibrahim Salafi of Government Shalimar College, Lahore
  • Professor Abdul Sattar Hamid
  • Professor Hamid Abdul Rehman

The government’s move signals a strong resolve to cleanse the education sector of political influence and uphold professional standards.

Conclusion: A Step Towards Accountability

This new action by the Punjab Higher Education Department highlights its commitment to accountability. By enforcing service rules and taking action against politically affiliated teachers, the government aims to ensure a neutral and professional learning environment. This step is a crucial effort to improve the quality of education in the province. Stay with Forum Pakistan for more updates on this developing story.
