Against this background, the popular streaming service Netflix is testing a “Netflix Direct” channel in France, which offers curated content on a TV-like basis. The test channel was launched on November 5th and will roll out across the country in December.
One of the main reasons for choosing France is that a large part of the population there still likes to watch TV channels. The company said:
In France, watching traditional TV remains hugely popular with people who just want a ‘lean back’ experience where they don’t have to choose shows. We’re trying a new feature for our members in France – called ‘Direct.’ Maybe you’re not in the mood to decide, or you’re new and finding your way around, or you just want to be surprised by something new and different.
Surprisingly, the function is not available via streaming devices, set-top boxes or televisions with integrated Netflix, but only via a browser. The global availability of the function is not yet known.
