Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root are part of the “Fab Four” because of their exceptional performance and consistency in all three formats. The inclusion of Babar Azam on the list and conversion to a “Fab Five” has been a point of discussion in the cricket fraternity for some time.
The argument against Babar’s involvement was that “he has to work consistently at such a level over a long period of time”. Babar has been the backbone of the Pakistani batting team for over a couple of years and has been rewarded by PCB with capturing the limited overs team.
Babar had two stellar years, scoring eight centuries in all formats. Four of its centuries were graded in tests while four were graded in ODIs. In the previous three years he had achieved nine centuries.
Its rich form has continued on the ongoing Zimbabwe tour of Pakistan. He scored a century in the third ODI and has scored two consecutive half centuries in the T20I series. He also showed promise with the bat on Pakistan’s most recent tour of England, scoring two half centuries in Tests and half a century in T20Is.
His status as a top 5 batsman was confirmed by the fact that he is the only batsman in the world ranked in the top 5 of each format. He also appears poised to regain his top spot in the T20I batsman rankings.

In comparison, Kane Williamson and Steve Smith are not even in the top five but have played fewer games. Kane Williamson has 1,841 runs with an average of 49.75 while Smith has 2,040 runs with an average of 56.66. Both have played 38 games.
