Canada has fundamentally changed its post-graduate work permit (PGWP) rules for international students who plan to study in Canada in fall 2020.
Now international students can enroll in Fall 2020 online courses while in their country and are still eligible for PGWP approval after moving to Canada.
PGWP approval allows international students to gain Canadian professional experience for a maximum of three years after completing their educational program at an institution designated by Canada (DLI).
Under normal circumstances, a PGWP application will not recognize online courses. However, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has chosen to count online courses against study requirements for a PGWP application worldwide due to continuing coronavirus travel restrictions.
This means that new international students can start online courses at a Canadian DLI in fall 2020, complete half of their education program in their country of residence, and receive PGWP permission to work in Canada after completing their studies.
International students can apply for PGWP approval for the full three years as long as they move to Canada before the end of 2020. After December 31, the IRCC will deduct time from PGWP approval for the period that students spend outside of Canada.
Canada has made this important change to allow international students to continue their post-secondary education instead of postponing it due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Although students continue to pay tuition fees after this change in the rules, they save a lot of money by not being physically present in Canada for their education.
The reform will ultimately help the Canadian economy, as tuition fees from international students will help support thousands of jobs at colleges and universities across Canada.
