Sugar Crisis At Utility Stores Intensifies

The sugar crisis at Utility Stores (USC) has escalated, leaving financially less fortunate citizens with limited access to subsidized sugar from state-run outlets.

USC’s Tender Offer for Sugar Procurement

Sources reveal that USC has received a tender offer of Rs. 130 per kg for sugar, as part of its latest bid to procure the commodity.

Response to the Tender and Price Hike

JDW Sugar Mills Limited (PSX: JDWS) is the sole respondent so far, proposing to provide sugar at the rate of Rs. 130 per kg. The tender committee will assess all bids in accordance with the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority’s guidelines. Meanwhile, retail and wholesale sugar prices have soared, increasing by Rs. 40 per kg and Rs. 2,000 per 50 kg, respectively, in the past three months, disregarding government recommendations.
