The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPREA) has issued a concerning announcement regarding a significant increase in the power tariff by Rs. 1.90 per unit due to the monthly fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for the month of May. This hike will be reflected in the consumers’ bills during the month of August, putting an additional burden of Rs. 23 billion on the already struggling masses amidst surging inflation and a weakened economy.
Tariff Adjustment Details
The raised electricity tariff will apply to all consumer categories, except for lifeline consumers and those served by Karachi Electric (KE), offering them temporary relief from the impact of this decision. However, for others, the escalating electricity costs will further exacerbate their financial hardships.
Future Tariff Prospects
Furthermore, NEPRA had recently approved a separate increase in the base power tariff by Rs. 4.96 per unit for the upcoming fiscal year 2023-24. This recommendation has been forwarded to the federal government for final approval. The government will decide whether to implement this increase in phases or all at once, affecting consumers’ long-term power costs.
