It is reported that Lahore University of Management Sciences has increased the semester fee by the huge increase of 41% without giving any prior information to the students. LUMS Lahore has manipulated the credit hours calculation technically to enhance the fee by up to Rs.140,000. LUMS Increases Next Semester Fee by 41%.
LUMS has made the policy to charge the fee from the students opting 12 CH or 20 CH by promoting the students to go for 16 CH on the average. The management has made the change in policy and they termed this change as the minimal and negligible difference in the final fee rate. The university claimed that they have increased only 13% per credit hour and the calculation shows that the fee is increased by 41.7% for the next semester.
It is said that the previous fee for 20 credit hours was Rs.340,200, which was divided into 20 equals and the fee comes to Rs.17,010.00. When the university announced 13% increase, the per Credit hour fee reaches to Rs.19,221.30 and the revised fee of the 20 credit hours reached to 384,426.
However, LUMS has announced the fee of Rs.482,000 for 20 credit hours as the university has increased the tuition fee and it will affect the large number of students. The management of LUMS has taken the step against their policy by dividing the fee figure of Rs.340,000 by 12 instead of 20 and they knew that most of the students are enrolled in over 16 credit hours or on average.
LUMS used the lower bound of credit hours to calculate value of each credit hour and translate the greater amount into the overall hefty semester fee. This way of calculation of the fee will give the benefit to the small number of senior students, who will take 12 credit hours in their last semester. LUMS said that they have made the decision of increase in next semester fee before the outbreak of COVID-19 because of the increase in energy costs and inflation and also for the devaluation of the currency. The new calculation of fee is now calculated on per credit hour basis and it will increase semester fees for some students and decrease for other students. The total fee meets the requirements of graduation and it does not change result of the shift to per credit hour basis. It will affect the students on their learning, who will not take course overloads.
