BYD’s EV Sales Soar in Pakistan, Local Plant Next

Chinese EV giant BYD has made a significant mark on Pakistan’s automotive market, selling over 2,000 cars within just six months. This strong start has solidified the company’s plans for local manufacturing. The highly anticipated Shark model has already received over 500 pre-orders, showing the huge consumer demand for electric vehicles. This success is paving the way for a new phase of BYD’s strategy, shifting from imported units to local production.

The Road to Local Manufacturing

To establish a long-term presence in Pakistan, Hub Power Company (Hubco) is leading the development of a state-of-the-art Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly plant in Gharo. This facility is a major investment, with an estimated cost of $150 million. The plant is designed to have an impressive annual production capacity of up to 25,000 vehicles, showcasing a strong commitment to Pakistan’s growing EV market. Hubco aims to complete the financial closure for the project in the final quarter of 2025, with production expected to begin within two years.

A Unique Joint Venture Model

The partnership for this venture is a unique 50:50 joint project between Hubco’s subsidiary, Hub Power Holding, and Mega Conglomerate. Unlike its typical global strategy, where BYD takes full ownership of its overseas operations, the Chinese EV giant has not taken an equity stake in this particular venture. This unique model highlights a new approach to collaboration for BYD as it enters the Pakistani market.

Powering the EV Ecosystem

Recognizing that a robust charging network is essential for EV adoption, Hubco is also taking proactive steps to address “range anxiety.” The company plans to install EV charging stations every 150-200 kilometers along the key Karachi-Peshawar Motorway within the next six months. Hubco believes that these charging stations can be financially viable with the daily usage of just three cars. The cost of chargers has also decreased significantly due to the availability of Chinese-made equipment, making the expansion of the charging network a sustainable business model.

Conclusion: The Future of Mobility is Electric

The success of BYD’s initial sales, coupled with the rapid development of a local assembly plant and a nationwide charging network, positions Hubco and BYD as key players in Pakistan’s EV revolution. The strong market reception proves that the future of mobility in Pakistan is set to be electric, driven by a combination of aggressive sales, local manufacturing, and a dedicated infrastructure.
