Scientists from the University of Utrecht have claimed to have discovered an antibody that effectively blocks the spread of infection by SARS-COV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease.
The antibody, known as 47D11, targets the spike protein of SARS-COV-2, which it uses to bind to cells and insert its genetic material.
Laboratory tests on mice have shown that 47D11 adheres to the spike protein and prevents it from binding to other cells. Utrecht researchers discovered the antibody from 51 mouse cell lines that were designed to carry human genes.
47D11 is known to target and block the spread of SARS-CoV-1, the coronavirus that caused the SARS outbreak in 2003. Scientists have indicated that the antibody can also attack SARS-COV-2 because it belongs to the same family of coronaviruses as SARS-COV-1.
Professor Berend-Jan Bosch of the University of Utrecht said that the latest research builds on the work that the University of Utrecht has done in the past on antibodies to SARS-COV-1.
Berend-Jan Bosch believes that if 47D11 is injected into the human body, it could change the course of infection or protect an uninfected person from the virus.
47D11’s ability to attack both strains of coronavirus and stop growth may mitigate the occurrence of coronavirus diseases in the future.
