You May Now Go to Jail For Disrespecting Pakistan Army

A bill amending the Pakistani Criminal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure in 1898 was approved by the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Home Affairs to crack down on those who deliberately disobey the armed forces.

Under the Criminal Law Amendment Act 2020, anyone who intentionally ridicules the armed forces can be imprisoned for up to two years or fined up to Rs. 500,000 or both.

PTI MNA, Amjid Ali Khan, introduced the law, after which it was approved by the NA Interior Committee on Wednesday.

The bill proposed changes to Section 500 of the Pakistani Criminal Code, which currently states:

Whoever defames another shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

The amendment, which shall be called ‘Section 500-A’, states:

“Punishment for intentional ridiculing of the Armed Forces, etc. Whosoever intentionally ridicules, brings into disrepute, or defames the Armed Forces of Pakistan or a member thereof, he shall be guilty of an offense punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or fine which may extend to five hundred thousand rupees, or with both”.

The bill was rejected by legislator Agha Rafiullah of the Pakistan Peoples Party and the legislator of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Maryam Aurangzeb, but passed by five votes to four.

پی ٹی آئی کے ایم این اے ، امجد علی خان نے بل پیش کیا ، جس کے بعد بدھ کے روز قومی اسمبلی کی داخلہ سے متعلق این اے کمیٹی نے اسے منظور کرلیا۔

اس بل میں پاکستان پینل کوڈ کی دفعہ 500 میں تبدیلی کی تجویز پیش کی گئی ہے جس میں اس وقت کہا گیا ہے
