Amazfit has been on our radar for at least a few years. The Original Amazfit Bip is the wearable that has managed to personally keep this reviewer from much more popular and expensive alternatives like the Samsung Gear S3. And the Amazfit GTR is still my daily driver. And it should be noted that this is not motivated by a lack of other options. The market for intelligent wearables is currently experiencing a kind of renaissance. Nevertheless, the products from Amazfit and Huami still occupy a special place in the ever-growing portable niche.
It is not surprising that we were very happy about the Amazfit T-Rex. It’s a sturdy wearable that seems to combine everything we think is great about existing Amazfit devices with a really sturdy exterior. Suitable for a more active lifestyle outdoors.
Most people, including us, appreciate Amazfit products for their amazing battery life. Just like the elegant GTR, the T-Rex maintains this amazing energy efficiency and easily offers 20 days of operation with a single charge.
All of this is made possible by years of refinement of the components and the design by the manufacturer Huami. A name that is not particularly well known, but says a lot about the T-Rex family tree and conveys a lot of confidence. Without the Apple Watch, Huami is the world’s largest portable device company with over 50 million units sold and a global market share of over 16%. In addition to its own fashion-conscious Amazfit brand, Huami is also the exclusive provider of Xiaomi wearables. As such, it is the company behind the popular Mi Band product line.

Back to the T-Rex as it’s more than just a Mi Band clone. In fact, the close-up assumption that it is just an Amazfit GTR in a different case is not entirely correct. However, both parallels are valid and important.
At its core, the T-Rex, like the Mi Band and the GTR, seems to be based on the same core of sensors and components. This is important to note, since none of these devices is technically a “smartwatch”. The lack of advanced functions and an app ecosystem from third-party providers makes the T-Rex technically a “smart wearable” rather than a fully equipped smartwatch. This means that you will not be able to progress with the standard standard functions and functions, unless Amazfit decides otherwise with an OTA update. In return, you get much better and more efficient operation. And partly thanks to the amazing 20 days plus battery life. A performance that is unattainable for current smartwatches with full functionality.
For many, including me, this loss of functionality is justified for reasons of battery life and the associated convenience. Just like other Amazfit “Smart Wearables”, the T-Rex is rich in functions. Definitely enough for most portable users. It processes both notifications and calls in a very efficient way and has a variety of activity and fitness tracking functions. If you include a surprisingly powerful GPS receiver in the mix, you get the T-Rex – a well-rounded and inexpensive product.
