Qualcomm is preparing to unveil its latest flagship mobile chipset, and leaks suggest a confusing naming strategy is on the horizon. While many expected a direct successor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, a new report from a prominent Chinese tipster points to a different name: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This naming decision could create some confusion in the market and for consumers on websites like Forum Pakistan.com.

Understanding the Confusing “Gen 5” Label
The “Gen 5” moniker might seem unusual, as it appears to skip three generations from the previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and one from the Snapdragon 8 Elite. However, a closer look at Qualcomm’s recent history provides some context.
- The Snapdragon 8 Elite, which debuted last year, was the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. In essence, it was the fourth-generation chip in the series, despite its new name.
- By this logic, the upcoming model would be the fifth generation, making the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 name technically correct, albeit unconventional.
Two High-End Chips for Next-Gen Mobile Phones?
Adding to the complexity, Qualcomm is reportedly also developing another high-end chip for release this year, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. This new processor is expected to be positioned just below the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in terms of performance and features. This creates a tiered lineup within the top-end Snapdragon 8 series:
- Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5: The top-tier flagship.
- Snapdragon 8 Gen 5: A slightly less powerful, high-end alternative.
- Snapdragon 8s Gen 5: A “trimmed-down” flagship option.
This strategy suggests Qualcomm aims to capture a wider range of the premium mobile market, from “flagship killers” to ultra-premium devices.

Early Benchmarks and Release Timeline
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 has already been spotted in early benchmark tests, most notably within a prototype of the upcoming OnePlus 15 smartphone. These early listings indicate that device manufacturers are actively working on integrating the new chipset into their next-generation devices. The appearance of these benchmarks suggests that the official unveiling of the chip is imminent, with industry watchers anticipating the reveal at Qualcomm’s annual Snapdragon Summit in late September.
