Pakistan is making a big change to its car industry. The government will enforce 57 new car safety standards for all cars made in the country. This new rule begins in October. It is part of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The goal is to make local cars safer and more like those made worldwide.
The new rules fix old concerns about vehicle quality. They aim to make cars safer for everyone who drives or rides in them. This step shows the government is serious about consumer protection. It also helps local companies meet international standards.
The New Rules for the Auto Industry
The government has added several new rules. These changes affect car makers and importers.
- New Institute: The government will create the Pakistan Automotive Institute. This group will check and approve the quality of car parts made in Pakistan.
- Import Ban: Importing “Type-D” vehicles is now illegal. These are vehicles with major damage from accidents. Also, new cars that are not verified cannot enter the market after September 30.
- EDB’s New Role: The Engineering Development Board (EDB) will now handle licenses for all car imports and sales. This ensures that every car meets high safety standards.
Local manufacturers must get a quality license from their head office. This new step helps make sure all cars sold are safe.
How These Rules Protect You
The new rules also protect car buyers. Companies must now recall cars or parts that have problems. If a company fails to do this, it could face big fines. They could also face two to three years in jail. This makes companies more responsible for their products.
The government also passed new laws to prevent “dumping.” This is when companies sell goods at unfairly low prices. These laws protect both buyers and local businesses. A big new law, the Motor Vehicle Industry Development Act 2025, will cover all new cars sold in Pakistan starting in 2025. This is a major update to the country’s car laws.
