Freelancers around the world are unable to access their money using their prepaid Payoneer card due to a recent Wirecard scandal in the UK.
Wirecard is a subsidiary of the German Wirecard AG, which filed for bankruptcy on Thursday. All Payoneer Prepaid Mastercard cards are affected because they were issued by Wirecard UK.
The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has instructed Wirecard Card Solutions Limited, a UK company, to suspend all regulatory financial activities, among other restrictions.
Payoneer made a statement to all prepaid card users in the following words:
Wirecard AG announced on Thursday, June 25, 2020, due to a continuing scandal due to the lack of $ 2 billion in bankruptcy. Former CEO Markus Braun was arrested on criminal charges. The shock waves of the Wirecard AG crash were felt worldwide.
Payoneer made it clear that future payments that the customer receives from marketplaces, platforms and customers are not affected. They also mentioned that the freeze is temporary and will be fixed soon.
These funds, and any others already on your virtual currency balance, are available for bank withdrawal. We are actively working on other solutions for you and your patience and understanding are highly appreciated. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we’ll update you with more information as soon as we have it.
The State Bank of Pakistan’s spokesperson was reluctant to offer any comment. He told media that they can’t regulate Payoneer.
“We will examine the impact of this issue on Pakistan,” he added.
