Restaurants in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are going the extra mile to support delivery riders during the scorching summer season, with temperatures soaring up to 50°C. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has reported these extreme temperatures.
To prioritize the safety and well-being of delivery riders, restaurants have implemented a range of measures. They have set up resting benches at handover locations, allowing riders to take breaks and rejuvenate. Additionally, free water is being provided to keep them adequately hydrated throughout their shifts.
Dubai’s Directive for Shaded Rest Areas
In Dubai, the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has issued a directive for all restaurants offering delivery services. These establishments are required to create shaded rest areas specifically for their riders during the summer season.
This directive, effective from 15 June to 16 September, not only applies to restaurants but also extends to shopping malls and cloud kitchens. The DET emphasizes the significance of these rest areas, stating that they play a crucial role in enhancing work quality. By allowing riders to take breaks between deliveries, their focus improves, resulting in fewer mistakes.
Requirements for Designated Rest Areas
As per the guidelines of the Dubai Corporation for Consumer Protection and Fair-Trade Law, the designated rest areas must meet specific requirements. These provisions aim to ensure the comfort and safety of delivery riders during Dubai’s scorching summers.
Rest areas should provide basic facilities such as chairs and tables to enable riders to take comfortable breaks. Moreover, these areas must shield riders from the intense heat. Easy access to drinking water and restroom facilities is essential to address the riders’ hydration and sanitary needs.
