| Younis retires from Twenty20 cricket |
|
LONDON: Minutes after leading Pakistan to a memorable World Twenty20 title here at Lord?s, Younis Khan announced his retirement from the slam-bang format of the game.
"Today I am retiring from Twenty20 cricket,"said Younis as he concluded a crowded press conference in the Middlesex Room at Lords.
Younis, 34, said that he wanted to keep his focus on Tests and One-day Internationals. "I think I am old for Twenty20 cricket," he said with a trademark smile. It would be better if youngsters get a chance to play and excel in it, added Younis who realised his childhood dream of emulating his idol Imran Khan by leading Pakistan to a world title.
There are young and talented players who have the capability of taking the team forward, said Younis. According to sources all-rounder Shahid Afridi is likely to take over as Pakistan's Twenty20 skipper during the tour of Sri Lanka later this summer.
Younis, meanwhile, also urged international teams to come and play in Pakistan. "We know there are problems in Pakistan but it is not our fault. It would be great if teams start coming to our country again, otherwise, how our youngsters would move forward in this game.

As Shahid Afridi said, younis should stay since the team is getting in a good form.....this would make the team more consistant in there performance and he is a great captain, he has shown to put unity into the team!

I hope Ijaz Butt is able to convince Younis to stay as captain of T20 as well for at least a little while. If however Younis does not change his decision then Afridi would be a great T20 captain as well. I admire his energy, cheer leading efforts and consistently motivating his colleagues.

Good decision by Younis Khan...I really think we need him in Test and ODIs but as many said T20 is not cricket where you can really show your skills and class.

Its good for Pakistan's T20 team. Because Muhammad Yousaf can take younis's place in T20. Although Younis is good captain but he is not T20 sort of player and he is very slow batsman. He suits for one days with his singles and doubles and he suits test cricket as well, but he is not a twenty twenty player. Its good that he has realised this and has decided to retire from T20.
