In the early hours of Thursday, WhatsApp experienced a widespread outage in several countries, leaving users unable to send or receive messages. DownDetector, an outage detection service, confirmed the app’s malfunction, with thousands of users affected across multiple countries. Concerned users took to Twitter to check if the issue was widespread.
Restoration Efforts and Parent Company’s Response
The outage persisted for over an hour before the instant messaging app’s service was finally restored. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, addressed the situation and assured users that they were diligently working to resolve the connectivity issues. An update was shared on Twitter, promising further updates on the matter.
Recurring Outages and Previous Incidents
This is not the first time WhatsApp has faced such an outage. In June, a similar incident occurred, leaving the platform inaccessible for about two hours. Before that, in January, the app experienced downtime. Moreover, in October of the previous year, WhatsApp suffered a massive outage, affecting users, including those in Pakistan, for hours.
