The United Kingdom (UK) has taken a significant step by adding several construction jobs to its “shortage occupation list,” aiming to address labor shortages in the industry. Occupations such as bricklayers, roofers, carpenters, and plasterers have been included in the list, enabling construction companies to recruit workers from overseas to meet the demand.
Overcoming Labor Shortages through Immigration Facilitation
To overcome the scarcity of local workers for specific roles, the UK government includes those occupations in the shortage occupation list. This initiative simplifies the recruitment process for UK companies, allowing them to easily hire individuals from other countries to fill these vacancies.
However, this decision presents a challenging situation for UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and his political party. While they have pledged to reduce the influx of people from other nations, the construction industry relies heavily on foreign workers to support its growth.
Migration Advisory Committee’s Recommendation
The Migration Advisory Committee, a group responsible for advising the UK government on migration matters, proposed the addition of construction jobs to the shortage occupation list. The list already encompasses occupations such as care workers, civil engineers, and healthcare roles. This recommendation arrives at a time when the UK witnessed a record-breaking influx of over 600,000 individuals last year.
Brexit’s Impact on Worker Shortages
Critics of the UK’s departure from the European Union (EU), known as Brexit, argue that it has exacerbated the shortage of workers. Prior to Brexit, individuals from EU countries could easily enter and work in the UK without much difficulty. However, post-Brexit, they now need to obtain a visa.
Relaxed Rules for Occupations
For individuals coming to the UK to work in occupations listed under the shortage occupation list, the rules are relatively relaxed. These workers can earn 80 percent of the standard pay for the job and still qualify for a visa. However, they must possess a job offer from an employer and demonstrate proficiency in English.
