The Senate Standing Committee on Privatization, led by Senator Shammim Afridi, conducted a comprehensive assessment of the privatization process concerning power distribution companies (DISCOs) in Islamabad today.
The committee was informed by the Joint Secretary (Power Division) that, except for Sindh, no other province has shown support for the proposal to acquire DISCOs. Recognizing this, it was decided to refer the matter of DISCOs privatization to the Council of Common Interests (CCI).
During the session, various officials provided additional insights into the case. They highlighted the Sindh Cabinet’s intention to purchase two power utilities, namely Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) and Sukkur Electric Supply Company (SEPCO), which are currently being offered for sale by the Privatization Commission.
Furthermore, it was disclosed that the Government of Sindh has opted to engage financial advisors to facilitate the acquisition of HESCO and SEPCO.
In addition to the Privatization Division, the federal government will also appoint financial advisors to expedite the proceedings in this matter.
