Qualcomm has finally announced the expected updated version of its Snapdragon 865 flagship processor launched in 2019. The new Snapdragon 865 Plus 5G has a design optimization with which the processing power for all AI and gaming applications is to be increased by up to 10 percent.
Compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 865 Plus 5G offers three major improvements:
- Its Kryo 585 prime core is clocked at up to a maximum of 3.1GHz, i.e., 10 percent higher than its predecessor that is clocked at a max 2.84 GHz.
- The chipset’s GPU, i.e., Adreno 650, offers 10 percent faster graphics rendering.
- The SoC is equipped with Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6900 connectivity suite, which, according to the company, supports Wi-Fi speeds up to 3.6Gbps.
The upgrade is pretty similar to last year’s Snapdragon 855 Plus, which offered similar minor CPU and GPU improvements.
Contrary to what many analysts believed, Qualcomm did not use this mid-year version to instead integrate the Snapdragon X55 modem into the main chipset. OEMs currently need to use a separate component in the phone. Therefore, it takes up additional space and affects the battery capacity of the smartphone. It looks like this special upgrade will be part of Qualcomm’s flagship 2021 at the earliest. Which essentially boils down to this version being a blatant robbery of money.
Qualcomm said the first Snapdragon 865 Plus phones will be officially announced in the third quarter. The company has also confirmed that the new chipset will power the upcoming ASUS ROG Phone 3 and Lenovo Legion Gaming Phone.
