PUBG Ban in Pakistan: Islamabad High Court Rejects Petition Against PUBG Ban

The Islamabad Supreme Court dismissed a petition against PUBG Mobile’s ban when it asked the Pakistani Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to issue a lawful written order as to why the game was banned in the country.

PTA temporarily suspended the Battle Royale game on July 1, citing parent concerns and complaints from various areas of society. In a press release, the regulator said that “the game is addictive, wasted time and has serious negative effects on children’s physical and mental health.”

A local PUBG player had previously relocated the Islamabad High Court on July 4 and asked the court to reject the PTA’s decision to ban it. The petitioner claimed that PUBG was a source of income for him and many others because he had won a local game tournament and would represent Pakistan in the PUBG World League on July 10th.

He also said that electronic gaming or e-gaming is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, so the ban doesn’t make sense.

IHC heard the case on Monday and asked the PTA lawyer why the game was suspended. He said the Punjab police wrote a letter to PTA mentioning the increasing number of suicide cases due to the game. He also said that the regulator had received numerous complaints from parents asking for a ban.

The IHC retail bank, led by Justice Aamer Farooq, determined that the PTA must mention the laws under which the decision was made. PTA replied that it would issue its order after hearing the petitioner.
