Pakistan Surpasses India and Iran in Nuclear Security

Islamabad – According to the latest assessment by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a US-based organization dedicated to reducing nuclear and biological threats, Pakistan has been ranked above India, North Korea, and Iran in terms of its handling of weapons-usable nuclear materials. The country has made significant progress, securing the 19th position out of 22 states, with a total score of 49. This score surpasses India’s 40, Iran’s 29, and North Korea’s 18.

Improved Nuclear Security in Pakistan

The NTI Index revealed that Pakistan is on par with Russia and Israel, ranking 32nd in terms of the security of its nuclear facilities. Moreover, Pakistan outperforms countries like India, Iran, Mexico, South Africa, and many others among 47 nations.

Concerns over Global Nuclear Security

While Pakistan’s nuclear security has improved, the index also sounded a warning about the deteriorating global nuclear security situation. The NTI Nuclear Security Index’s 2023 report indicates that nuclear security conditions are regressing in many countries with weapons-usable nuclear materials and nuclear facilities. This trend is a matter of concern for international security.

Countries Expanding Weapon-Grade Material Stocks

The report highlighted that several countries, including Pakistan, are expanding their stocks of weapon-grade materials. Eight countries, namely France, India, Iran, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, and the United Kingdom, have increased their stocks of weapons-usable nuclear materials. This trend undermines efforts for minimization and elimination and increases the risk of theft.

Focus on Radioactive Source Security Assessment

Apart from the NTI Index, there is a separate Radioactive Source Security Assessment that evaluates national policies, commitments, and actions across 175 countries and Taiwan to secure radioactive sources and prevent a dirty bomb. The assessment does not score or rank countries but provides valuable insights into radioactive source security efforts worldwide.
