Pak student refuses to receive award from US envoy
Updated at: 2200 PST, Wednesday, June 18, 2008

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani student Wednesday refused to receive prize from American ambassador N.W. Patterson at a ceremony hosted by private school in Islamabad.

Student Samad Khurram refused to receive the award in protest against killings of Pakistani people as a result of US attack in Pakistan’s tribal areas and its continued support for President Musharraf.

Speaking on the occasion. U.S envoy said she was deeply hurt by the killing incident and trying to clear the misunderstanding.

Earlier, she stressed on the need to increase people to people contacts for better relations between two countries.

Patterson further said 5400 students went to U.S for acquiring educations previous year.

I am proud of such Pakistanis. It is an American saying that"Paying back is a b i t c h"& it is the practical example of it.when we respect ourself other will than respect us.We should come out of our pascimism shell,we should act & behave like a proud & living nation. We should not de estimate our selves.Complexes comes from ones background,if you are sure of yourself you will meet others on your eye level. We abroad living proud Pakistanis are thirsty of every positive progress even if is only symbolic gesture.I personally salute my Pakistani student & hope that others with a some optimism behave the same no matter where they are.We can have difference of oppinions,we might have some regrets,we might have suffered in Pakistan but it should remain like inside the family,to the others we should show our unity, love for Pakistan & try to project the positive side of our society & country. We should positively criticise any wrongdoing in Pakistan, but outside we should be ready to serve & defend our country at every place & on any forum.

Ps:I tried in that phrase to use the real word Bi eye tee cee hetch, the computer is not accepting I don,t know why.It should be read as a b i t c h (female dog).

This is an apt example of protest against the US govt's blatant policy of killing innocent civilians and unprovoked attack on Pak Army soldiers.

yeah we all salute Samad! this is called Self-Respect; This is exactly what Allama Iqbal talked about in all his poems
The spirit of "Khudi", that boy Samad has got the sense of "Khudi" and I simply love it. Its only and only "Khudi" which can make us a proud and progressive nation and its "Khudi" which will enable us to see super powers eye-to-eye and make us a super power(although we dont want to be).

WELL DONE SAMAD KHURRAM , WE Proud of U, The unfortunate part is that no one present in the huge hall of NCA joined this nationalist young Pakistani in his gesture. At the very least, Pakistanis present in the hall should have given him a standing ovation.
The other unfortunate part is that none of the 80 or so Pakistani news channels highlighted the incident. Why did we allow private Pakistani channels in the first place? Wasn’t it to project Pakistani position to the world? If this was the Indian media, if this was the Chinese media, if this was the Iranian media, if this was the Arab media, if this was Turkish media, this incident would have been repeated at the top of every news bulletin for the day.

I hope some of the defeatist ‘liberal’ Pakistanis working for television news channels might be reading this. If you know someone there, please admonish them. I know plenty myself. But I work for one. I don’t own it. Never will.

It is sad that ordinary Pakistanis will always be more nationalist and patriotic than their so-called ‘liberal’ intellectuals and their non-intellectual politicians.

But Samad Khurram, no matter what, we are proud of you.

Normally the Pakistani nation only remembers the dead people, but this person is great and I would like to have some road or street of Pakistan named to him. At Present may be only Punjab Government can do this and by doing so appreciate what Samad Khurram has done.

I commend the act of this Pakistani at this level, there is always something we can do to convey the message effectively. He sacrificed the award, conveyed the message and became a hero. Also this message came from no fanatic or extremist but from a talented moderate student which conveys a different kind of message all together.

Whethere one agrees with his stance or not, there is a right time and place for everything. This was just not it.

Tregedy of our country is when we mix our politics and mazhab with everything specially when we ourselves at times look confused over culture, politics and religon. We tend to think 1 is the other. Its even more pethetic to mix politics with education. Thats the last thing our jahil qoum needs.

Indeed a very patriotic act by him especially to the American ambassador who should think hard about the treatment meted out to Pakistani's by Americans and the anger its causing amongst us.
