Netflix Implements Password Sharing Ban in UAE

As of 20th July, United Arab Emirates (UAE) residents are facing a significant change in their Netflix experience. A report by the Khaleej Times states that Netflix users can no longer share their passwords beyond their homes. This move comes as part of the streaming giant’s broader initiative to combat the widespread practice of password sharing.

Strict Rules to Limit Sharing

To curb password sharing, Netflix has implemented strict rules that only permit people residing in the same home to share passwords and access the same Netflix account. A Netflix customer service representative confirmed the enforcement of these new regulations to the Khaleej Times.

Monitoring WiFi Networks and IP Addresses

Netflix is taking active measures to ensure compliance with the new rules. The company will closely monitor WiFi networks and IP addresses of devices logged into each account. This will help them identify accounts being used outside of their authorized households.

Global Impact and Expansion of New Policy

The policy of restricting password sharing is not exclusive to the UAE; it has also been rolled out in India, with Netflix reaching out to customers who share their accounts beyond their households. Prior to this, similar restrictions had already been put in place in more than 100 countries, including major markets like the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil, as reported by Mashable.

A Compromise for Paying Customers

Despite the clampdown on password sharing, Netflix has introduced a new feature that allows paying customers to add an additional member from outside their household to their account, albeit for an extra monthly fee. This move aims to find a balance between limiting unauthorized access and catering to the needs of families or close friends who want to share a subscription.

User-Friendly Profile Transfer

Mashable reported that Netflix has made the process of adding a new member user-friendly. Members now have the option to transfer a profile to a new account, while keeping their viewing history and personalized recommendations intact. This feature is designed to make the transition smoother for users availing the additional member option.
