Over the past few months, loan apps in Pakistan have faced increasing scrutiny, prompting regulatory actions and tighter policies. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has undertaken large-scale crackdowns, resulting in office shutdowns and the removal of certain loan apps from the Google Play Store.
Google’s Collaboration with SECP
Google, the search engine giant, has joined forces with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) to enforce stricter regulations against these apps. The collaborative effort aims to address concerns surrounding data privacy and consumer protection.
Suspicious Data Collection Practices
The suspicions surrounding these loan apps are not without basis. Many of these apps, including those registered with the SECP, request an alarming number of permissions, even for seemingly simple tasks. For instance, Barwaqt, one of the popular loan apps, demands access to your phone gallery, contacts, app activity, and personal information.
Opaque Permissions Lists
Some of the well-known loan apps, like JazzCash and Easypaisa, do not disclose their full list of permissions on the app store. Users only discover the extent of data collection once they download and install the app on their phones. Such practices raise legitimate concerns about the need for such intrusive access.
Massive Data Collection
These loan apps gather an extensive amount of data from their users. Although modern Android versions allow users to control app permissions, the mere existence of such practices is highly questionable. It’s worth noting that these apps boast a combined download count of over 70 million on Android.
Widespread Data Collection Offenders
Apart from Barwaqt, other SECP-registered loan apps, such as EasyLoan and Muawin, are also involved in similar data collection practices. Together, these apps have amassed over a million downloads.
Recurring Trouble
These recent crackdowns and privacy concerns are not the first instance of trouble for loan apps. The apps have faced previous accusations of excessive data collection, raising questions about whether this data is utilized for the benefit of the apps or potentially sold to third parties.
SECP’s Warning
In response to mounting concerns, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has issued a stern warning to registered loan apps, including Barwaqt, to rectify their predatory data collection practices or face imminent closure within a week.
