Karachi’s public transport system has been rated the worst in the world by internationally acclaimed Bloomberg magazine. The magazine published a report detailing what makes the city’s public transport the worst in the world.
The report highlights that Pakistan’s largest city’s public transport system was once some of the most modern in the world. The time is mentioned when a local railroad circled the city and provided daily transportation within the city to the Karachi public, but the ongoing corruption, mismanagement and conflicts of interest in the late development all took a positive toll on the city’s development 1990s.
The report also stressed that Karachi’s public transport system is the worst in the world and that the state of roads, enforcement and rule compliance are in dire straits. Public transport in the city consists of the popular “omni buses”, which are hardly suitable for suitable means of transport, especially for women.
Regarding the cause of the dire state of public transport in Karachi, Arsalan Ali Faheem, a consultant at DAI – a Maryland-based company that advises on development projects – aptly stated, “Karachi, despite its importance, is a political orphan,” which suggests that the largest commercial center in the country has fallen victim to numerous clashes of a political nature and has been completely abandoned over the years in the chaos of any positive development.
Adam Weinstein, a researcher at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft in Washington DC, said on the subject of road encroachments and illegal slums in the dilapidated local rail network, “Karachi has yet to find a humane way to address land encroachments that prevent human development and relocation without an immense political setback ”.
The growing population and the stagnant state of control and balance raise some questions regarding the development of Karachi. As public transport is considered the worst in the world internationally, the city receives a lot of negative attention from around the world.
