In a recent natural calamity, landslides have wreaked havoc on the transportation infrastructure in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), leaving countless passengers, including tourists, stranded in various parts of the region.
Chaos on the Karakoram Highway (KKH)
The Karakoram Highway (KKH), a critical route connecting Pakistan and China, faced multiple blockages in Diamer, including Lal Pari, Gandlu, and Tattapani, disrupting travel and causing inconvenience to many. Unfortunately, the vulnerable Tattapani section, where an alternative road project was suspended last year, proved to be a significant hindrance.
Rockfall Halts the Juglot-Skardu Road
The Juglot-Skardu road, another crucial link in the region, was also obstructed at Talu in the Rondu valley due to heavy rockfall. Tourists and locals alike expressed their frustration over the slow pace of restoration work on both the Juglot-Skardu road and the KKH.
Efforts to Restore Connectivity
Although no human casualties were reported, two cars were damaged near Tattapani on the KKH. In a ray of hope, the works department managed to open the KKH for one-way traffic in Diamer on Sunday evening, and ongoing efforts were made to reopen the Juglot-Skardu Road. Despite these endeavors, it is advisable for travelers to check the road clearance status before commencing their journeys.
