Iran is contemplating a significant measure to facilitate tourism by considering a proposal to allow visa-free entry for passport holders from 60 countries. The decision was made by the deputy tourism minister on Wednesday, with the goal of stimulating international arrivals and revitalizing the tourism sector.
The proposal, initiated by the tourism ministry, has been submitted to the President’s office following Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to the ministry. Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant authorities are reviewing the proposal.
With a focus on reciprocity and mutual interest, the proposal suggests waiving visa requirements for 60 countries, particularly those with Muslim and neighboring nations. This move aims to encourage tourism and enhance relationships with these countries.
Unlocking Iran’s Tourism Potential: A Path to Visa-Free Travel
Tourism plays a crucial role in Iran’s economy, which has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and US sanctions. The country boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage, along with diverse natural attractions. It is home to 24 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the ancient ruins of Persepolis and the breathtaking mosques of Isfahan.
Earlier this month, the tourism ministry announced a remarkable growth in foreign tourist arrivals, with approximately 850,000 visitors in the first two months of the year—a more than 50 percent increase compared to the previous year. Data from the Bureau of the World Tourism Organization reveals a 315 percent surge in foreign tourist arrivals in 2022 compared to the previous year.
Shalbafian, the deputy tourism minister, expressed optimism that this proposal would attract more tourists to Iran and improve the country’s global image. Additionally, he highlighted the potential positive impact of normalized relations with Saudi Arabia on the tourism industry.
