Iran carried out the execution of two individuals on Saturday in response to their involvement in an assault on a Shia shrine, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 people. The attack, which took place in October, was claimed by the militant group ISIS, according to Iranian state media reports.
Execution of the Attackers
According to the official news agency IRNA, the two individuals were hanged at dawn in Shiraz, a city located in southern Iran. During their trial, the defendants admitted to being in contact with ISIS operatives in neighboring Afghanistan and confessed to assisting in the organization of the attack on the Shah Cheragh shrine in Shiraz, as reported by Iranian media.
Details of the Attack
CCTV footage, aired on state TV, revealed the harrowing events of the assault. The footage depicted one of the attackers entering the popular shrine while concealing an assault rifle in a bag. As worshippers attempted to escape and seek refuge in the corridors, the assailant opened fire. The perpetrator, identified as a Tajikistani citizen, succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack while receiving treatment in a hospital. Initially, officials stated that 15 individuals had perished, but the figure was later revised to 13.
