India Announces To Ban Social Media Platforms

In the beginning of 2021, the Indian government announced strict new rules for social media companies and a code of ethics for OTT streaming platforms. The new rules monitor the implementation of the rules and regulations and provide strict and extensive responsibilities to intermediaries for fear of legal liability or action, which may lead to excessive censorship of content

A deadline of three months was given to Social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram which has now ended

Top officials of the country have revealed that the platform was required to comply with the Intermediate Guidelines and the rules notified in the Digital Media Ethics Code Rules 2021 as announced in the Gazette of India on February 25, and they have complied with many accounts to date. Have failed

According to Sources:

If social media companies do not follow the rules, they may lose their status and protection as intermediaries and may be liable for criminal proceedings under existing Indian law.

So far, none of the top social media intermediaries, except for the Indian social media company Cook, has appointed a Resident Complaints Officer. Due to arbitrary suspension of accounts on the platforms and inaction on misuse and bias, locals have been constantly complaining against tech companies. So far, no platform has shown any inclination to comply with India’s domestic laws and the government intends to crack down on them from tomorrow.
