A year has passed since import restrictions on automobiles were implemented in Pakistan. Since May 2022, the industry’s production, sales, and revenue have been steadily declining. As a result, the auto industry’s expansion has come to a grinding halt.
Heading 2: Decrease in Bike Sales
According to the data from the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers’ Association (PAMA), bike sales have experienced a significant decline. In June 2023, bike sales were down by 15% compared to the previous month. Atlas Honda, one of the leading motorcycle manufacturers, sold 75,056 bikes, representing a 14% decrease in sales month over month (MoM).
Heading 3: Impact on Motorcycle Manufacturers
Manufacturer | Bike Sales in June 2023 | Monthly Change (%) |
---|---|---|
Atlas Honda | 75,056 | -14 |
Pak Suzuki | 363 | -56 |
Yamaha | 942 | -15 |
Chinese motorcycles | – | -22 |
Pak Suzuki, another prominent motorcycle manufacturer, faced a substantial decline in sales as well. In June, they sold only 363 motorcycles, marking a staggering 56% decrease compared to May 2023. Similarly, Yamaha sold 942 motorcycles in June, experiencing a 15% decline compared to the previous month. Chinese motorcycle sales also witnessed a decline of up to 22% compared to the previous month.
The data does not clarify the cause of the sales decline, but experts suggest that import restrictions and production halts are impacting bike manufacturers. In addition, inflated motorcycle prices may also play a role. Despite rumors of import restoration, sales are expected to stay weak as the industry gradually recovers from economic and operational difficulties.
