Even though the government has eased blockages across the country, COVID-19 continues to beat up the automotive industry. Both the supply and the demand of vehicles have declined sharply since the spread of coronavirus in the country.
In a recent report published by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturer’s Association (PAMA), passenger car sales alone were down 75% compared to the same period last year. This means that only 3800 units were sold in May this year, compared to 15.428 units in May last year.
Sales of vehicles with 1300 cc or larger engines decreased by 89%, as only 802 units were sold in this segment compared to the previous year. While sales of Toyota Corolla alone with just 294 vehicles sold fell by 93% compared to the previous year’s figure of 4069.
In addition, Honda Civic and City sales decreased 90%, with only 263 units sold, compared to 2,564 in the same period last year. While Suzuki Swift sales declined 82% and sold only 78 units this year, compared to 425 units in May 2019.
In the same category, Toyota had just proposed its new offer, i. H. Den Yaris, with two engine variants, namely a 1300 and a 1500. Due to a massive outbreak of the corona virus, the car was not yet able to attract market attention, resulting in only a meager 167 units being sold across the country.
In the 1000 series, sales performed comparatively better than the cars mentioned above. Suzuki Cultus and WagonR saw a 75% drop in sales after selling 1,308 units instead of 5,311 units in the previous year, while the 800 category saw a 45% drop in unit sales and sold 1690 units instead of 3059 units in May last year.

Commercial Vehicles
Sales of commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks decreased by 47%. Only 3,380 units were sold this year, compared to 6,351 units in May last year. Off-road SUVs and trucks saw a 54% decrease to 3,217 units sold this year compared to 7,009 units sold in the same period last year. While auto rickshaw and motorcycle sales fell 26%, 1.22 million units were sold this year compared to 1.64 million units sold the previous year.
Local automakers have also expressed concern about the government’s plans to simplify the policy of vehicle imports into the country. It is feared that, in addition to the current problems with COVID-19, the influx of imported cars could destroy the confidence of foreign investors and newcomers in the Pakistani automotive industry such as Kia, Hyundai, BAIC, etc.
It has also been claimed that importers are responsible for the evaporation of large chunks of currency because they use illegal channels such as Hundi and Hawala. Therefore, the government should tighten vehicle import parameters to give local automakers a chance to fight.
