Meta’s newly launched Twitter rival Threads has generated massive excitement since its release. Within a short span of time, the app amassed an impressive user base of over 100 million, surpassing the growth rates of ChatGPT, TikTok, and other popular online platforms.
A Promising Start
Nevertheless, the initial surge in popularity may have been short-lived. On July 7, the app boasted a peak of over 49 million daily active users on Android. However, this number drastically declined to 23.6 million by July 14, accounting for only 22% of Twitter’s user figures.
Diminishing User Engagement
In terms of user engagement, Threads experienced a significant decline as well. Users spent an average of 21 minutes interacting with the app on July 7, but by July 14, this usage time plummeted to just over 6 minutes. Intriguingly, even at its peak, Twitter’s daily active users on Android remained relatively stable, albeit with a 4.3% decrease in platform usage, possibly due to users exploring Threads.
Addressing the “Empty Party Problem”
Threads managed to tackle the common challenge faced by new online communities known as the “empty party problem.” By allowing Instagram users to effortlessly create a Threads account and import their existing contacts, Meta succeeded in attracting over 100 million signups within a brief period.
Critical Features and User Adoption
Despite its rapid growth, Threads still lacks crucial features and fails to provide compelling reasons for users to switch from Twitter or adopt it as their primary social network.
The Rivalry with Twitter
The competition between Threads and Twitter is evident, as the availability of Threads caused a 5% decrease in web traffic to twitter.com during its initial days.
Establishing Itself as a Genuine Alternative
While Threads has undeniably carved out a significant niche within Twitter’s market share, it faces significant challenges in establishing itself as a true alternative to the popular social media platform.
