The Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) published the information on the production and sale of the automotive industry for the month of April and makes for a shocking read.
According to a PAMA official, not a single vehicle was produced or sold in April. “I haven’t had any production or sales in automotive history for a month, and the situation for May looks the same, which is alarming for the US auto sector. “The total sales of cars in the first 10 months of the current financial year decreased by 52% compared to the previous year to 86,330 units.
Honda experienced the worst slump, with car sales down a staggering 64% year over year over this period, followed by Indus Motors, which saw sales down 54% year over year. Pak Suzuki saw sales drop 47% year over year.

Why Have the Sales Gone Down to Zero?
There are two ways of looking at it: in order for a car to be counted as sold, it must be delivered to the customer. If a person has booked their car and even paid the full amount, it will only be counted as sold if it has been sold it has been delivered.

According to PAMA representatives, sales and production figures for May could be similar to those in April, which could have devastating effects on the industry.
We have already seen several automakers like Honda and Toyota raise their car prices due to the devaluation of the rupee. Now without production or sales, they have to increase their prices again, which could possibly lead to a further decline in sales once the block is over.
On the business side, they could be forced to lay off part of their workforce to save costs. There has been talk of an industry-wide bailout package, and these numbers could only increase the chances. Another thing that has gone largely unnoticed is how this will affect new entrants like Hyundai, who just launched their new cars, and BAIC, who wanted to launch later this year.
While neither company would have the numbers to compete against the established automakers in a coronavirus-free world where sales and production are already discontinued, it will be difficult to get going and this will have an impact on other future potential investors .
