Despite the challenges posed by temperature variations, Monsoon uncertainties, and pest attacks, cotton production in Pakistan has seen a remarkably promising start in 2023.
Significant Cotton Arrival in Ginning Factories
As of July 15, the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PGCA) has reported that 0.858 million bales have already reached ginning factories, signifying the early operationalization of numerous ginning units this season.
Provincial Contributions to Cotton Production
Sindh accounts for the major share of cotton production with 0.659 million bales, out of which more than half came from a single district of Sanghar. Meanwhile, Punjab contributed 0.2 million bales, with Khanewal district holding the largest share.
Ambitious Government Targets
The government has set a challenging cotton production target of 12.7 million bales for the current season, covering 2.764 million hectares of land. This ambitious goal is three times higher compared to the previous year’s production, which was significantly impacted by floods.
