The Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority (IHRA) has launched a comprehensive inquiry into a devastating incident involving the loss of a patient’s life during a surgical procedure at a privately-owned medical facility.
Concerns Arise After Fatal Surgery
The incident took place on July 21, 2023, during what was expected to be a routine orthopedic surgery. However, the outcome turned tragic, leading to an official complaint filed by the deceased patient’s son.
Victim’s Identity and Surgery Details
The deceased patient, Muhammad Sajid, a 54-year-old private company employee, underwent an ankle surgery at a private hospital situated in sector G-8, Islamabad.
Investigation Initiated and Complaint Lodged
Prompt action was taken by Sajid’s son, who lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the Karachi Company police station. The FIR named both the hospital administration and the orthopedic surgeon responsible for the surgery under spinal anesthesia.
IHRA’s Efforts Amidst Challenges
The IHRA has received a formal complaint urging them to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the true circumstances surrounding Sajid’s untimely death. Although a preliminary report has been compiled, the investigative process encountered hurdles, as direct communication with the involved doctors and hospital owners proved difficult.
On-Site Investigation Planned
Despite the challenges, the IHRA remains committed to resolving the matter and has planned to send investigative teams to the health facility for an on-site inquiry.
