South Korean students are back in the classroom for the first time in three months.
But in many ways it’s not going to school as usual. When high school graduates returned to school on Wednesday, they had their temperatures checked, wore masks on campus, and were seated at desks that were spaced apart in accordance with common social distancing practices.
However, within hours of the reopening, dozens of schools in Incheon, a city near the capital, Seoul, had to close after two students tested positive for coronavirus. South Korea – which has reported more than 11,100 coronavirus cases and 264 deaths – appears to be largely in control of its outbreak. Now the country is trying to return to something that is approaching normal life. However, South Korea’s experience shows that reopening schools does not mean returning to normal – and that there are still risks.

In New Zealand, which was praised for its quick approach to fighting the outbreak, students across the country went back to school on Monday after eight weeks at home. In parts of Australia the children are already back in school.
In China, where the first coronavirus cases were reported last year, students went back to school in March, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. Earlier this month, the education ministry said that about 40% of the students were back in the classroom.
A new normal for classrooms
The experience of students in the Asia-Pacific region shows that even if countries reopen schools, this does not mean a return to the old methods. Not all students return in South Korea at the same time.
South Korea’s students have not been in the classroom since the spring break in February.
Students usually go back to school in early March, but the start of the spring semester was delayed until early April, when students started the new school year with online classes.
Wednesday was the first day for older students, but students from other classes will return in the next few weeks. By June 8, students of all ages are expected to be back in school.
The risk in going back
Bringing children back to school is not without difficulties. Dozens of schools opened in South Korea on Wednesday, and only closed after two students tested positive for coronavirus in Incheon, a city near Seoul. These cases are believed to be related to an outbreak in Itaewon, a nightlife district in the capital city that has been linked to more than 200 cases.
On Thursday, a high school in the South Korean city of Daegu sent students home and closed the school after a student tested positive, an official from the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education said. According to the official, the student who tested positive was one of 17 who moved to the dormitories a few days ago.
Kwon Jun-wook, deputy director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), said Thursday that school education must take place alongside disease prevention. “Therefore, we currently believe that this must continue in our current response regime with the collaboration and participation of all of our employees,” said Kwon. On May 13, authorities in Jilin, a northeastern Chinese city in a province of the same name, bordering Russia and North Korea, announced that all resumed classes would switch to online as the area struggled with an increase in new cases.

China’s best respiratory expert, Zhong Nanshan, told CNN last weekend that the country was still vulnerable to another wave of fatal coronavirus infections. “We are facing a major challenge – it is no better than abroad, I think at the moment,” he said.
And when New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that the country was loosening the restrictions – including allowing children to return to school – she cautioned.
“We ask all of you to be incredibly careful when we return to a new, safer, normal state,” she said on May 11. “None of us can assume that Covid is not with us.”
