In response to the need for maintaining law and order during the Holy month of Muharram ul Haram, the Pakistan Army has been called upon to aid local authorities. This move comes as various regions, including major metropolises and provinces, impose measures to ensure security during religious observances.
Deployment of Pakistan Army
Under Article 245, four companies of the Pakistan Army have been called in, and strategic points have been designated for their deployment in major cities until Ashura. Additionally, the Interior Ministry has also notified armed forces’ deployment in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu, and the four provinces, following the authorities’ requests during Muharram.
Punjab’s Section 144 and Other Region’s Curbs in Place
In light of the religious significance of Muharram ul Haram, the government has imposed Section 144 in Punjab, restricting certain activities to maintain law and order. Other regions have also implemented measures to ensure security during the commemoration period, including prohibiting unauthorized processions and gatherings.
Muslims’ Tribute and Religious Practices
During the first 10 days of Muharram ul Haram, Muslims mourn the martyrdom of Imam Husayn Ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Some devotees choose to fast on Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, which also witnesses significant processions and gatherings by Shia Muslims.
