Huawei’s Honor sub-brand expanded aggressively into the world of accessories after the US trade ban led to the search for alternative sources of revenue to offset the decline in overseas phone sales. The latest announced device was the Honor Magic Earbuds – originally known in China as Honor FlyPods 3 and also available in some markets under the name Huawei Freebuds 3i.
We received a Robin Egg Blue couple in the office and spent a lot of time with them, so we are now ready to share our impressions.
The Honor Magic Earbuds in blue are definitely outstanding – they not only differ from the dozens of other TWS earphones, but also stand out from a distance. There is also a huge Honor logo to avoid confusion.
The case in the sales packaging has the shape of a pill – it is somewhat more rectangular than the carrying case of the Galaxy Buds. There are strong magnets to ensure that the buds are placed in the correct position.
One thing that might bother you is the asymmetrical positioning of the two earbuds in the case – the movement for each bud from the case to the ear is slightly different, which requires a bit of training and adjustment.
The charging case itself has two LED lights – one in the front and one inside between the two earphones. There is also a USB-C port on the back for charging, which supports speeds of up to 5 W via the cable (in other words – any charger is sufficient). Right next to it is a small button that is used for pairing. It only works when the housing is open. After three seconds, the earphones establish a magical connection to a Huawei / Honor smartphone or are available for Bluetooth pairing with another device.
Design and appearance can only offer so much – after all, the most important thing is audio. Honor has inserted a 10 mm driver unit in each earphone to achieve a clearer sound. The sound is balanced across all frequencies, but that doesn’t mean that it’s perfect. And the big problem is that the bass is not available at high volume and even distorted on certain tracks.
Far from being audiophile, the Magic Earbuds are more suitable for the average user who wants to get rid of the cable ties of the past. After all, the bass and overall sound issue hardly matters when listening to podcasts, answering calls, or watching videos.
Another important use case for wireless earphones is the freedom not to pull your phone out of your pocket. There is a touch sensor on both buds – double tap to start / stop the music, long press to turn noise cancellation on or off. When you speak, it turns on automatically.
And here’s another important thing – the performance of Honor Magic earbuds during a call. They are equipped with two external microphones that work alongside a third on the inside. In theory, they should find out where the voice comes from and filter out other background noise.
In practice, the microphone picks up other people’s voices and focuses on them when they are not properly positioned. This means that they may not be the ideal companion for calls in crowded areas (not that there are currently many of them). The elongated portion of the headphones can also hinder the proper placement of certain face masks.
According to Honor, the Magic Earbuds can last for 3 hours on a single charge when active noise cancellation is activated and 30 minutes longer when you turn the function off. This is extremely accurate to the minute, and while Honor ads have a volume of 50%, our usage was 100%, so they actually deliver too much. However, it is extremely rare for someone to have the headphones out of their pockets for three hours unless you are on a flight somewhere, and at the moment we know that this is not the case.
The charger has a 415mAh battery, and Honor promises you’ll get up to 14.5 hours of audio, which is four charges from 0 to 100% of the earbuds.
Demand for wireless headphones continues to grow, and it is no surprise that Honor is joining the party – after all, the same brand omitted the 3.5mm audio jack on its flagships more than a year ago. If anything, it took longer than expected for these TWS earphones to arrive.
Honor Magic earbuds are great for many use cases – they do their job and look good. Yes, the audio quality is mediocre – far beyond what SoundSport Free from Bose or the AirPods Pro can offer, but Honor is clearly aimed at much more casual listeners.
The Magic Earbuds are conveniently placed under $ 100 – the official price is $ 99, but there are several offers in European markets that can cost up to $ 80 and you can often get them for free when you buy certain smartphones.
Even if you don’t own a phone made by Huawei, the Honor Magic earbuds remain a good choice – those who use their TWS headphones to listen to podcasts and watch videos on the go are sure to see them as an excellent deal, and that’s earlier so you consider the impressive design.
If you listen to more music and have quality sources, you may be looking for a pair with superior audio quality, although the chances of finding a TWS pair that matches this description in this price range are absurdly slim.
