0.2 Million Jobs Generated by Launch of 3G/4G Services in Pakistan

Since the introduction of 3G/4G services in Pakistan, the telecom sector has emerged as a major driver of employment, generating substantial opportunities for both direct and indirect employment.

Telecom Operators’ Expansion Spurs Job Creation

The successful auction of spectrum in 2100 MHz and 1800 MHz bands in June 2014 paved the way for the launch of 3G/4G services in Pakistan. As a result, telecom operators have expanded their networks and towers across the country, leading to an impressive job market growth.

Since the inception of 3G/4G in Pakistan, the telecom sector has generated an estimated 200,000 employment opportunities, comprising both direct and indirect jobs. Among these, 5,780 jobs have been directly created by telecom companies, while the remaining positions are in various other sectors linked to the industry, such as Mobile Phone Shops, Franchises/Retailers, Tower Manufacturers, Tower Installation Companies, Tower Security Staff, Sub-Contractors, and Consulting/Service Companies.

Diverse Job Opportunities Beyond Telecom Operators

The employment boom is not limited to telecom operators alone. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued 30 authorizations to mobile device manufacturing companies, resulting in an estimated 50,000 additional job opportunities.

It is worth noting that the figures mentioned above do not account for induced employment created in the economy due to the widespread adoption of 3G/4G services. Industries such as e-commerce, e-businesses, e-banking, ride-hailing and delivery services, freelancing, and others have also benefited from the technological advancements, leading to a further surge in employment prospects.
