PM Shehbaz Sharif Unveils Journalists’ Health Program

In an announcement made by Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb on Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is all set to inaugurate a dedicated health insurance program tailored exclusively for journalists on the 7th of August.

Easy Registration Process for Journalists

To avail the benefits of this program, journalists can effortlessly register themselves by completing the digital form accessible on the Press Information Department website. Minister Aurangzeb highlighted that the online registration process ensures transparency in the system.

Substantial Budget Allocation

The government has allocated a noteworthy sum of Rs. 1 billion from the federal budget to fund this health insurance initiative, underlining its commitment to the welfare of journalists.

Acknowledgment of Journalists’ Issues

Minister Aurangzeb empathized with the long-standing concerns regarding health insurance and salaries for journalists. She appreciated the government’s proactive approach in addressing these matters. Notably, the Independent Tribunal for Newspaper Employees successfully recovered Rs. 110 million, which was directly disbursed to staff in the print media sector.

Inclusive Coverage for All Journalists

The Journalists’ Health Insurance Program extends its benefits to all journalists and media workers, regardless of their membership status in press clubs. This move aims to provide comprehensive coverage to the entire journalism community.

Separate from PM’s Health Card Program

Minister Aurangzeb clarified that the Journalists’ Health Insurance Program is distinct from the existing PM’s Health Card program. Journalists already benefiting from the latter will not be eligible for the former, ensuring fair distribution of resources.

Government’s Stance on Media Restrictions

Addressing concerns about media restrictions, the minister assured that the current government refrained from taking punitive actions against journalists expressing criticisms about its decisions and performance. Freedom of the press remains a paramount principle.
