PTA Denies Immediate Implementation of Iris Biometric SIM Registration

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has stated that there are no current plans for an immediate implementation of SIM registration through the iris biometric system. This decision is contingent on the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) collecting users’ iris data beforehand, as SIM registration and verification will depend on matching this data. While NADRA’s new biometric authentication system “Iris” shows potential, discussions between PTA, NADRA, and mobile phone operators are required before any concrete agreement is reached.

PTA Denies Immediate Launch of Iris Biometric SIM Registration

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has refuted any claims of an imminent start for SIM registration using the iris biometric system. PTA officials clarified that there has been no proposal under consideration at present.

NADRA’s Iris Biometric System Demands Extensive Data Collection

To pave the way for mobile SIM registration through the iris biometric system, NADRA must first collect users’ iris data. The magnitude of Pakistan’s population, approximately 250 million, necessitates millions of machines across the country to facilitate this process, which will take time.

Collaborative Efforts with NADRA and Mobile Phone Operators

While PTA has initiated the issuance of SIMs through the Multi-Finger Biometric Verification System (MBVS) since December 2022, no agreement has been reached yet with NADRA regarding the iris biometric system. An existing agreement between NADRA and mobile phone operators has tightened SIM registration through MBVS, proving effective in preventing fraudulent issuance of SIMs.

Prospects of Iris Biometric System for SIM Registration

PTA remains open to discussions with NADRA about adopting the iris biometric system for SIM registration, as it holds potential in countering forgery and fraudulent activities. The involvement and consent of mobile phone operators will also be sought in this regard before any formal agreement is reached.
