Pakistan Army Loses 12 Soldiers in Suspected Militant Attacks

In a series of suspected militant attacks, the Pakistan army reported the loss of 12 soldiers, including an assault on one of its bases. The base was stormed by Islamist militants armed with guns, hand grenades, and rockets, resulting in the deaths of nine soldiers. Another incident took place in the Sui district, where three soldiers were killed in an exchange of fire with heavily armed “terrorists.” Two enemy combatants also lost their lives during the encounter. The army confirmed that all five militants who attacked the base were killed in retaliatory fire. Subsequently, the army announced the successful completion of an operation to clear the Zhob district in southern Balochistan province.

Jihadist Group Claims Responsibility for Base Assault

A newly founded jihadist group known as Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP) claimed responsibility for the assault on the army base. In a statement, the group declared its involvement and announced its intention to release pictures and videos of the fighters who participated in the attack. Balochistan, a region rich in minerals that shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran, has been grappling with a long-standing ethnic Baloch insurgency. Additionally, Islamist militants seeking to overthrow the Pakistani government and impose their own strict interpretation of Islamic law have been active in the area. Since the termination of a ceasefire agreement with the government in late 2022, these militants have escalated their attacks, including a devastating bombing at a mosque in Peshawar that claimed over 100 lives.

Militants’ Operational Bases and Denials from Afghanistan

The Pakistani government has stated that militant groups have relocated their operational bases to Afghanistan. However, the Taliban-led government in Kabul has denied these claims. With a population of 220 million, predominantly Muslim, Pakistan continues to face the threat of Islamist militancy.
