Switzerland’s Technological Support to Aid Pakistan in Natural Disasters

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the significance of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Pakistan and Switzerland in the field of disaster management. This agreement marks an important milestone in fostering collaboration between the two countries to effectively address natural catastrophes by leveraging technology and expertise.

Prime Minister’s vision for Swiss cooperation in disaster management and beyond

During the MoU signing ceremony, the prime minister expressed his anticipation of Swiss cooperation in acquiring an advanced warning system and other essential tools to enhance Pakistan’s preparedness against natural disasters. He emphasized that Pakistan, despite its low carbon emissions, continues to experience the adverse effects of global climate change.

Furthermore, the prime minister conveyed his aspiration to expand bilateral relations with Switzerland across various sectors, including tourism, given Pakistan’s abundant natural beauty. He commended the Swiss foreign minister’s acknowledgment of regional peace and emphasized the role Switzerland can play as a catalyst in promoting peace within the region.

Pakistan’s commitment to progress and prosperity while addressing regional issues

The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to fostering progress, eradicating unemployment and poverty, and promoting education, IT, industry, women’s empowerment, and agriculture for the betterment of its people. He emphasized the need for the other side to recognize Pakistan’s commitment and aspirations. Pakistan cannot afford regional tension and must allocate its resources toward national development.

The prime minister underscored that lasting peace in the region cannot be achieved until issues like Kashmir were resolved. He emphasized the importance of finding a peaceful solution to these issues.

Speaking at the ceremony, Foreign Minister of Switzerland Ignazio Cassis emphasized the critical nature of the MoU in addressing climate change through collaboration. He recognized Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes but noted the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters, as evident in the floods and displacement experienced last year.

Cassis stressed the urgent need for international cooperation to mitigate the risks associated with natural catastrophes. He reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and pooling resources to tackle these challenges effectively.
