Massive Seizure of Luxury Mobiles Worth Rs. 60M at Islamabad Airport

Customs officials at Islamabad Airport made a significant breakthrough on Friday by intercepting and confiscating 250 luxury mobile phones worth a staggering Rs. 60 million. The incident involved the arrest of two passengers and sheds light on a potentially widespread issue of smuggling and corruption within the Customs department.

Seizure of Luxury Mobile Phones

The vigilant officers stationed at Islamabad Airport successfully seized a consignment of 250 high-end imported mobile phones, including popular models such as iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14. These luxury devices, valued at Rs. 60 million, were discovered during routine checks by the Customs officials. The successful operation not only resulted in the prevention of illegal trade but also highlighted the need for increased vigilance and stricter enforcement measures.

Arrests and Diverted Flight

The events unfolded when flight PIA 216, en route from Dubai to Peshawar, had to be diverted to Islamabad due to unfavorable weather conditions. Taking advantage of the situation, passengers attempted to smuggle the luxury mobile phones. However, thanks to the prompt actions of the Customs staff, two individuals, identified as Mohammad Abbas and another unidentified passenger, were apprehended. The total number of seized phones included 139 from Abbas and 111 from other passengers.

Concerns of Smuggling and Corruption

Sources close to the investigation revealed a troubling trend of collusion between passengers and Customs personnel, leading to the successful clearance of valuable goods at various airports. These incidents often go unnoticed or unaddressed, raising concerns about the integrity of the department. The recent seizure at Islamabad Airport serves as a wake-up call for the authorities to investigate these allegations thoroughly and implement stronger measures to curb smuggling and corruption.
