Supreme Court Allows PIA to Fill 205 Vacant Positions Amid Financial Concerns

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has recently granted Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) permission to fill 205 vacant positions within the company. This decision overturns the ban on new hiring that was imposed by the court on 31 March. PIA had sought approval from the court to expedite the hearing in order to hire over 250 new employees. The court’s two-member bench, led by Justice Ijazul Ahsan, reviewed the petition on Wednesday, and PIA’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) presented their case before the court.

Court’s Concerns About PIA’s Financial Obligations and Service Quality

During the hearing, Justice Ayesha Malik expressed concerns regarding PIA’s financial obligations and questioned the necessity of hiring additional personnel. She also raised questions about the airline’s service quality, highlighting the significant monthly expense of Rs. 90 million that would be incurred due to the new hires. In response, PIA’s CEO emphasized the airline’s profit of Rs. 3 billion over the last six months and outlined the company’s comprehensive plans to revitalize and ensure its financial stability. These plans include successful flights and the expansion of new international and domestic routes.

After thorough consideration of all arguments, the court instructed PIA to maintain transparency in the hiring process. The court approved the filling of 205 positions, including pilots, cabin crew, and experts. Although slightly lower than the initially requested 250 positions, this approval signifies a positive step for PIA’s growth and development.
