Former cricketer, commentator Aamer Sohail attacked Wasim Akram for his role in alleged revolts shortly before the 96 ‘, 99’ and 03 ‘World Championships. The 53-year-old claimed that Akram made sure that Pakistan didn’t win a mega event after 92 minutes until he retired.
There was this persistence before every World Cup to remove the captain and put Wasim in that role.
Aamer Sohail, who contested 47 tests and 156 ODIs, said Pakistan could easily have won 4 World Cups in a row from 1992 to 2003 if the legendary fast bowler had been sincere.
Aamer pointed out that despite other captains who had fared well before the ICC events, there were campaigns to get Wasim Akram to the top. He cited the 1996 example and said:
It’s very simple. Put the 92 World Cup to one side and talk about the 1996 World Cup. In 1995 Ramiz Raja was captain. Saleem Malik was the captain before that, he was very successful and if he could have spent one more year as captain then Wasim Akram would not have been leading the side.
The former cricket player has asked the authorities to investigate the drama before each World Cup and to bring the culprits to justice.
“Wasim Akram’s biggest contribution to Pakistani cricket was to make sure Pakistan didn’t win a World Cup after 92. Imran Khan should be very grateful to him and give him the Presidential Prize,” concluded Aamer.
Pakistan lost its quarter-finals against India in 1996, Australia in 1999 and was eliminated in the opening round of the World Cup in 2003.
